HARRY SHAPIRO

It is with great sadness that we write to advise of the death of Harry Shapiro who was a Vice President of both Maccabi GB and the JC Maccabi (Southern) Football League.

Harry was a Glaswegian and was a very active member of Glasgow Maccabi as well as being a voice of Maccabi Union before he relocated to London in the 1960’s.
Once he had come to London, he became a member of Ivri Maccabi in Forest Gate, East London and helped with their sports programme particularly in the promotion of football teams and table tennis.

Harry also served as the Hon. Sports Director of Maccabi Union until 1987 and was also the secretary of the organisation for some years. He was a Vice Chairman for some time.

He served on the league’s Management Committee as a divisional representative, as publicity officer for a short while but mainly as the representative of Maccabi Union on the league’s Management Committee.

Harry was one of the main promoters of the Maccabi Union Peter Morrison Cup which, prior to 1976, had been played for under the auspices as the Leslie Luck Cup where the entry was restricted to the members of Maccabi Union which most of the teams in the Maccabi (Southern) Football League could not compete.
He oversaw Maccabi Union’s sports programme in those days which included the annual athletics day and other annual events.

When he retired as an active member, he became a Vice-President of both organisations.
