Maccabi GB Sports Awards 2010

Maccabi GB Sports Awards 2010

The Maccabi GB Sports Awards are a unique opportunity for the Jewish community to honour and reward outstanding Jewish athletes dedicated to their sport. Maccabi GB engages Jewish people of all ages in an active Jewish environment and the Sports Awards provide a platform to see which members of our community are making it to the very top of their chosen field. These awards will be the ninth to have taken place since they started in 1993.

Following an impressive couple of years for Jewish sportsmen and women, the pinnacle being the 18th Maccabiah Games last summer, the Maccabi GB Sports Awards 2010, sponsored by Pentland Group plc, will be presented at a prestigious awards ceremony on 14th March 2010. The awards will be hosted by Jo Ankier together with well known TV and radio personalities Graham Miller and Rob Nothman.

Pentland is an international brand management group involved in the sports, outdoor and fashion markets and Maccabi GB are delighted to have secured their sponsorship once again.

There are four award categories:

1. Pentland Senior Sportsperson of the Year Award
2. Jewish Chronicle Junior Sportsperson of the Year Award (Aged 18 or under as of 14th March 2010)
3. UJIA Team of the year
4. Richard Urban Lifetime Achievement Award

Nominations will be judged by a professional panel of judges.

The recipient of the Jewish Chronicle Junior Sportsperson in 2008 was Lara Nyman. Lara was the British Triathlon Champion for her age group and continues to dominate the sport. Professional footballer Joe Jacobson won the Pentland Senior Sportsperson Award in 2008 after what was an impressive year for him. Joe was the regular left back for Division One side Bristol Rovers at the time and also captained the Wales Under 21 squad. He is currently playing for Division One side Oldham Athletic.

There are two further awards that will be presented on the evening. The Ken Gradon Maccabiah Award will be awarded to an outstanding athlete from the Games. This award will be hotly contested following some spectacular performances from Team GB. The last award is the CST Young Sports Leader of the Year which will be awarded to one of our most promising participants on the Streetwise Sports Leadership programme.

Maccabi GB Chairman, Stuart Greenberg, said, "The past couple of years have seen much success for British Jewish sportsmen and women both nationally and internationally.
The 18th Maccabiah Games that took place in the summer provided a platform for our athletes to shine and there were many notable performances with a number of them bringing home medals. I look forward to seeing all of the nominations come in and it will be a tough year for the judges to choose a winner!"
