Year 6 Netball Tournament
Burnt Oak Leisure Centre Tuesday 25th March 2008
Maccabi GB, in partnership with UJIA, held the Girls Year 6 Netball Tournament at Burnt Oak Leisure Centre on Tuesday 25th March 2008. Six schools attended brining eight teams to the tournament. Despite the cold conditions all the players were well supported by the teachers and families from the participating schools.
For the initial part of the tournament the teams were split into two groups and played in a league basis. The group stages of the tournament saw some competitive matches played with some really good netball skills on show. This Tournament was the second Maccabi GB netball event to follow the High 5 netball rules that have been set by England Netball. The change of rules reduces the number of players on the court to five and allows them more freedom on the court; this in turn allows the young players to become more involved in the games. Some of the schools have not previously played High 5 Netball and it was pleasing to see the schools supporting the new format.
After the initial group stages, the top two teams progressed into the semi final. From Group 1 Moriah School finished top and Independent School came second. In Group 2 Clore Shalom School topped the group with Kerem School coming second. The semi finals saw group winners Moriah School play Kerem School and the other group winners Clore Shalom play Independent School.
The semi finals were both good quality games. Clore Shalom School looked particularly strong as they beat Independent School in the first semi final. Kerem took an early lead against Moriah School in the other semi final. Moriah School stared to claw their way back into the match, however Kerem School were not to be denied and scored the last few points of the match to make it through to the final.
The final itself was an incredibly tight game. The quality on show was as high as any other game on the day and undoubtedly featured the strongest two sides in the tournament. Clore Shalom School scored the first point of the match only for Kerem School to tie up the match just before half time. Clore Shalom School took the lead again after half time and then managed another point to lead 3-1. Kerem School rallied and got a point back shortly before the end of the match but despite their best efforts they could not stop Clore Shalom School winning the final and retaining their title as Year 6 netball champions for a second successive year.
The afternoon finished with the awards ceremony for both finalists and the presentation of the trophy to the victorious Clore Shalom team.
