Secondary Schools Tournaments

Maccabi GB, in partnership with UJIA, held the Secondary Schools Badminton and Table Tennis Tournaments at JFS School on Wednesday 26th March 2008. The event was attended by JFS School, Immanuel College School, Yavneh College and Hasmonean High School. Both tournaments were split into three separate age groups with Years 7 and 8 playing together, Years 9 and 10 playing together and Year 11 onwards making up the final age group.

The badminton tournament was played in a league format with each individual team playing each other once. The overall winners of the league would be crowned the champions. There was a high standard in all the age groups and it was pleasing to see the strong competition in a sport that is not often thought of as being as popular as the more traditional sports such as football and basketball. The Years 7 and 8 age group was won by Hasmonean High School’s pair of David Ullman and Uziel Rabson. The Years 9 and 10 age group was won by the JFS School pair, George Fierstone and Elliott Myrants-Wilson. It was a pair from JFS School that also won the Year 11 plus age group. Adam Shellard and Bradley Cohen being the successful pair.

The Table Tennis tournament was run in similar fashion to the badminton with each individual player playing everyone else in their age group, the winner being the person who won the league. There were some extremely close matches and some real quality players were on show. All four schools were well represented by their players and all three age groups went right down to the wire before it became clear who the overall winners would be. In the oldest age group, the Year 11 plus, Rafi Maron from JFS School won the tournament without losing a single game. Having been ranked as one of the top twenty players in the country in his age group, Rafi was always going to be tough competition.

The winner of the Years 9 and 10 group was Johnny Khedair from JFS. After some close matches early on in the tournament, the JFS student eventually went on to easily win the title. The Years 7 and 8 age group was the closest. With only a few matches remaining there were three boys in contention for top spot. Going into the final round of matches that had been whittled down to just two. Daniel Fattal from Immanuel College School showed great composure to win his final match and take victory in the youngest age group, winning nine out of the ten matches he played.

The Badminton and Table Tennis tournaments are always well received by the students and it was great to see almost seventy participants taking part.

Attention now turns to the next Maccabi GB School Sports Event which is the Girls badminton tournament which is taking place at JFS School on Wednesday 7th May 2008.
