Young Leaders Provide for Their Communities
On Wednesday 17th March 2010, Guru Nanak Sikh School hosted the second of four Alan Senitt Community Leadership Programme seminars, delivered by Streetwise, in which students from Watford Grammar School for Boys, Nower Hill High School and Immanuel College were in attendance.
The Alan Senitt Community Leadership Programme was created last year by the Alan Senitt Memorial Trust, a charity set-up following the tragic death of Alan Senitt in 2006. The leadership programme was written and is delivered by Streetwise.
The programme engages year 10 school students from four different secondary schools: Watford Grammar School for Boys, Guru Nanak, Nower Hill High School and Immanuel College. Each group of students will plan and implement a local community project, drawing on the experiences gained at each of the seminars.
The Three Faiths Forum are the third partner organisation involved. The nature of the programme is to bring students together from different faiths and cultural backgrounds and the Three Faiths Forum are able to ensure that pupils gain the most from this interfaith experience.
Each school prepared a presentation, focusing on their local community and the project that they have chosen to deliver in order to benefit their community. The students then took part in workshops looking at feedback and informal education and the role that these will play within their projects. Finally, a number of experts in their fields were brought into deliver a set of master classes focusing on different areas of project management including inclusivity, finance and marketing.
Students will now turn their attention to planning and preparing the finer details of their community projects over the next few weeks. Streetwise Leadership Manager Sam Aboudara commented: “I believe today has been very beneficial for the students. Many have mentioned that the topics covered today are not just useful in planning their projects but are also helpful life skills.”
