Summer Camp 2007
August 2007
Building on the success of last year’s Summer Camp, Sunbury Court was again the venue for Maccabi GB’s Summer Camp 2007; Machane Kayitz. Over 60 participants from across Britain of ages 8-14 took part in the week of fun-filled action, sponsored by the JNF.
Throughout the week the Chanichim were transported to different decades by Dr Jew and his trusty Tardis with his companion Bubbala. For each decade they looked at different aspects of the life and events of that time in Britain, and, with the help of two Israeli Madrichim, Israel as well.
Streetwise, Maccabi GB’s joint initiative with the CST visited the camp on Monday and ran programmes looking at personal safety and personal development. After completing the Streetwise mission on safety and defence the Chanichim produced and starred in their own Streetwise Musical looking at different issues brought up in well-known musicals such as Grease and Oliver Twist.
Leaders from the JNF joined the camp for an Israel day on Tuesday which had the participants taking part in a colour war and visiting different areas of Israel. Wednesday saw everyone go to the High Ashurst Outdoor Centre where everyone enjoyed teambuilding exercises, ropes courses and survival techniques.
Thursday showcased Summer Camp’s most talented members in our very own ‘Maccabi’s Got Talent’ competition with varied acts from mime to singing. Judged by special guests Valerie Herman and Nicky Parnes with members of the Chazak and Amatz groups, and hosted by Madrichim Ben and Lori the standard of the acts was unprecedented on a Maccabi camp with Emily Charles and Hannah Zachariah the eventual winners.
After a spiritual and peaceful Shabbat, which everyone contributed to, finished off by a moving Havdallah service it was time for the disco. Featuring some questionable dancing by the Madrichim, everyone enjoyed their last night together.
After another hugely successful Summer Camp we are looking forward to seeing the Chanichim next summer.
Joe Berg the Rosh of the Chazak Group said, ‘Summer Camp 07 was great fun for all that took part. The addition of Israeli Madrichim to our team brought new activities and added an interesting perspective making this camp very different to the previous three I have been involved in. I look forward to next year’s Summer Camp which will no doubt be just as entertaining.’
