Leadership Weekend Report
Purim comes early at Maccabi GB National Leadership Weekend supported by Streetwise
29th February – 2nd March 2008
Maccabi GB in partnership with UJIA continued its commitment to training young Jewish leaders and investing in our community. Last weekend saw 75 young people from across the country attend the second Maccabi GB National Leadership weekend of the year. The 14 to 18 year olds thoroughly enjoyed the fun filled and inspiring programmes centred on the theme of Purim (falling on 20th March). Messages from the Purim story made the framework of the weekend; antisemitism, vanity and a more contemporary Purim issue, the effects of alcohol misuse, were some of the areas covered.
The Streetwise message of inspiring confidence inside and out was an important component of the weekend. All participants took part in a personal development session engaging in important topics including antisemitism, gambling and substance misuse. For the first time at a Leadership weekend the participants had an additional Streetwise session in personal safety looking at topics such as street awareness and basic self defence techniques.
Mike Blonde, Streetwise chief instructor of personal safety stated, “The youth of today are vulnerable and the importance of them being taught personal safety has the upmost relevance in their continuing development.”
As always Maccabi GB bogrim guided their groups through their specific course training in leadership skills and sports coaching. Leadership participant Amy commented; “The activities and were really interesting and fun, the best part of the weekend was meeting new people and hanging out with my old friends.”
