‘BATTLE OF BRITAIN’ BRINGS COMPETITIVE EDGE TO MACCABI GB’S COMMUNITY BADMINTON DAY

Monday 15th September 2014, Hendon – The Community got a ‘sporting invasion’ on Sunday as 12 members of Maccabi GB Scotland journeyed to London to take part in the Maccabi GB Community Badminton Day.

The event, at Hendon Leisure Centre, was run in conjunction with Maccabi GB’s Weekly Badminton Club and welcomed 42 competitors in total. The event involved three main competitive tournaments - including Junior Singles, Open (male and female) Singles, Masters Singles, and Junior and Senior Doubles – to determine which Badminton athletes really were the ‘Best of Britain’.

The Junior Categories were won by Ben Spilg (Maccabi GB Scotland) in the Singles and Jack Shulton (Maccabi GB) & Alex Cotes (Maccabi GB Scotland) in the Doubles. David Sperling (Maccabi GB) triumphed in the Open Males, with Bryan Seaton (Maccabi GB) reigning victorious in the Masters category. Louis Graham (Maccabi GB) and Oliver Davis (Maccabi GB) finished the day as Senior Doubles champions.

As part of Maccabi GB’s ‘Sport for Everyone’ programme, the Community Badminton Day encouraged Jewish people to get involved in sport and exercise, regardless of age or ability.

Speaking about their experience at the Community Badminton Day, Maccabi GB Scotland’s Gilah Samuels said, “This was really important for our Scottish Community to get involved with Maccabi GB on a National level.  It gives our boys tournament experience which they might not necessarily get back in Glasgow.  Thank you London for hosting us, we look forward to reciprocating your hospitality in the future”

John Roback, Maccabi GB Badminton Chair, who helped run and oversee the event said,   “It was good to see more than 40 attendees at the event.  It was great to have Maccabi GB Scotland visiting and providing such strong competition.  There was a good balance of juniors and adults competing and the round-robin competition enabled us to mix different abilities with the most skilled players contesting the latter knock-out stages. With so many different competitors to January's event it's evident that Badminton is a popular sport in the community at all ages.”
