Maccabi GB, in partnership with UJIA and the Jewish Chronicle, is delighted to officially announce the Open Football squad who will compete at this year’s European Maccabi Football Trophy (EMFT) in Balatonfüred near Budapest, Hungary.
Mill Hill Dons Manager Brandon Hammé will oversee the squad with Maccabi GB School Sports Coordinator Jordan Sapler as Head Coach. Both have a long history of playing in the Maccabi GB Southern Football League (MGBSFL) and will now look to make their mark on the European stage in Budapest in just two weeks’ time.
Speaking about the appointment, Hammé said, “I have been wanting to get involved with Maccabi GB internationally for a while so I was absolutely delighted when I was selected as squad manager. We have a really strong squad heading into the competition which we believe could seriously contend for a medal.”
On squad selection, he added, “The morale around the team is great which has made the process for everyone really enjoyable so far. It’s important that we maintain this heading into the tournament as a strong chemistry within the team will put us in a great position heading into the tournament.”
Sapler continued, “I’m really excited to be coaching the team. It’s a talented squad and I have no doubt that if we play to our potential we will return home with medals, having also experienced a great weekend mixing with the Jewish communities from our European friends.”
Great Britain, who hosted the 2014 event, have a proud history in this competition. They won the Open Football event in 2010, were runners up in 2014 and won the Open Futsal tournament the same year. In 2016 they brought home the silver medal in both the Football and Futsal tournaments in the Costa del Sol.
The squad, made up of players from across the Maccabi GB Southern Football League (MGBSFL), is as follows:
Manager - Brandon Hammé
Head Coach - Jordan Sapler
