MACCABI GB MACCABIAH ATHLETES DEFINITELY NOT MISERABLÉ THANKS TO FUNDRAISING EVENING

Maccabi GB’s Maccabiah athletes had something to sing about on Sunday night as they came together to watch an exclusive screening of box office smash, ‘Les Miserablés’, at the Phoenix Cinema. This was a unique opportunity as the film had only been released two days prior and many cinemas had sold out their shows weeks in advance.

The fundraiser, hosted by Maccabi GB, saw members of the community attend the event in East Finchley to raise money which will contribute towards Team GB’s athletes and coaches participation in this summer’s 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel.

The night was made extra special for one of the attendees, Valerie Cohen (60), who was present on the opening night of the stage production in London on 8th October 1985. Valerie, from Mill Hill, said it brought back a lot of memories, “When Anne Hathaway started singing “I Dreamed a Dream” it brought back memories of Patti LuPone at the Barbican and I had a little tear in my eye! It was great to see the production turned to film, but I’m just happy I was able to help raise some money to send the Maccabi GB sportspeople to Israel. Everyone should get a chance to meet other Jewish people from around the world in the Holy Land”.

In total, 255 people raised over £4,500 for Team GB’s Maccabiah squad. This is in addition to the £5000 which was raised at Maccabi GB’s previous Maccabiah Fundraising event – a showing of the stage production of ‘Chariots of Fire’ on 8th November 2012.

Speaking about the event, Maccabi GB Event Manager, Elizabeth Fishel said, “The film itself was great but, more importantly, it was also a fantastic way for the athletes attending the Maccabiah Games to raise funds towards their cost of participation. There was such a positive response from the representatives’ friends and families, many who bought tickets themselves, and we would like to thank all of them for helping send our athletes to Israel.”

The next fundraising event for Team GB’s Maccabiah Squad will be in the near future, so watch this space.
