Sam Waley-Cohen and Shachar Head scoop Prestigious Maccabi GB Awards

Maccabi GB's Awards night, in partnership with UJIA and hosted by Sky Sports News presenter Olivia Godfrey and Chelsea TV’s Emma Pollard, paid homage to Jewish sport's brightest talent with the pinnacle of the evening being the announcement of the Senior and Junior Sportsperson of the Year Awards.

Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Amateur Jockey Sam Waley-Cohen was named the Maccabi GB Senior Sportsman of the Year 2011. Sam was unable to attend the ceremony due to competing in the Kibworth Run; however he was presented with his award earlier in the week which was filmed and screened at the ceremony.

Sam has had an exceptional 2011 winning the King George VI Chase in January 2011 on Long Run, preventing Kauto Star from winning the race for a record fifth consecutive year. He managed to keep the winning streak going and in the 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup he beat favorites Denman, Kauto Star and Imperial Commander to be the first amateur in 30 years to win the Gold Cup on his father’s horse, Long Run. He then came second in the 2011 Grand National on Oscar Time.

The Maccabi GB Young Sportsperson award was won by Power lifter Shachar Head who was delighted to win the award: “I’m speechless,” said Shachar. “To be here among so many talented people made me feel so proud. It’s brilliant being here, let alone winning”. Shachar who lives outside of London and does not have local access to a local Maccabi Community turned to her mother at the end of the evening and said “I feel so at home here”.

15-year-old Shachar holds the World, European and National records in her age and weight categories and has personal bests of 125kg (squat), 73kg (bench press) and 150kg deadlift. She will compete at the World Championships in Scotland in November and was recently shortlisted as an Olympic flag bearer for 2012.

As well as the awards, the 250-strong audience was treated to some great entertainment including singer Talia Welka, Ballet dancer Sasha Leigh and magician Andrew Murray.
