Match Report

Having spurned the chances they created vs Chile and missing out on a Final berth, Team GB had to make do with the Bronze Medal play-off against Maccabi USA.

Playing against a very strong wind GB struggled early on and it was no surprise when the US took the lead on 10 mins through a fine strike. With several walking wounded Great Britain were finding it hard to impose themselves and soon lost Keeper Jacobs to injury. The rest of the side battled on and had a few half-chances; Abrahams impressing with his strong running and never-say-die attitude. However, clear chances were few and far between.

Daryl Lazarus was next to fall, his hamstring giving way, but his brother Bradley defied an injury of his own to fight on for the cause. With the wind at his back he drove two long range free kicks but neither effort troubled the keeper. Soon after a corner caused mayhem when it swung in and came off the bar.

There was a lot of huffing and puffing but no real sights of goal until, entering injury time, Schweiger powered a header forward where Laurence Beck jumped, collected it on his chest before swinging a volley that arrowed into the top corner to spark joyous scenes.

20 minutes of Extra Time came and went with neither keeper having anything to do, so to penalty kicks the game went. Unfortunately, misses from Lazarus, Swerner and Dryer meant Team GB went home empty handed.

Open Tennis

Samanthan Cohen and Gregory Bernstein could not add to the former's Bronze Medal in the Open Tennis Doubles event played yesterday and today.
