Team Maccabi GB have returned home from the 2019 Pan American Maccabi Games in Mexico. Whilst the scores didn’t all go their way, the squad have come back having made new friendships or rekindled old ones made at previous Games and connected more to their Jewish Identity.
The 75-person delegation was made up of Masters Over 35s, 45s, 55s Football, Tennis and Padel Tennis.
They shared a unique Maccabi Friday Night with athletes from all over the world which is repeated at all Maccabiot and regional International Games. It highlighted what we have in common as Jewish people no matter where we come from around the world. There was no greater example of this than just before one of the football matches Maccabi GB were involved in, when both teams spontaneously burst into traditional Jewish song and dance, just before kick off!
Sam Cohen, Assistant Head of Delegation, who won a gold and silver medal in the Masters Tennis tournament said, “20 years on from my first Maccabi GB experience as a Junior athlete in Stirling, Scotland, I am proud to bring home gold and silver in my first masters tennis competition. But beyond the medals, it was such an honour to once again represent Team Maccabi GB and be part of such a great group of athletes and managers. It was a fun filled sport, community and Jewish peoplehood. Once again, I come away with incredible Jewish memories, new friendships and immense Jewish pride.”
Head of Delegation, Brian Green, reflected on the Games, “The camaraderie within this squad is second to none and combined with the fantastic organisation and unbelievable hospitality from our hosts, has made this one of the best Games ever.”
Maccabi GB CEO Martin Berliner said, “Whatever the results on the sports field, the success of these events in our eyes is the unique combination of a social, cultural, educational experience wrapped in Jewish Identity through the prism of sport. The combination can be addictive and those who attend once will often want to return again to reconnect to this experience with Jewish friends from around the world.”
