A 40th London Marathon like no other!

Written by Debbie Nathan

Ten months ago I decided to take on the gigantic challenge of a full marathon. I was very fortunate to have secured a charity place in The London Marathon back in April 2020. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 it was postponed until October 4th 2020 then again to October 2021. I decided to complete the VIRTUAL London Marathon on the October 4th with the support of my friend Sue Donoghy running the VIRTUAL BRIGHTON MARATHON and Sam Blood supporting and navigating us on her bike. This was my first ever full marathon and I was very excited for the challenge.

The route we took was inspired by the girls in my class at North London Collegiate School. Their first topic in Year 2 is to design a London Landmark model so I decided to design my route to incorporate all of the 22 Landmarks that the girls made starting at London Zoo and finishing at Buckingham Palace and including thelikes of the Olympic Stadium, Monument, The Shard, Canary Wharf, Big Ben, The Royal Albert Hall, to name only a few.

However, a year ago I never thought I would be raising money for a charity in support of someone so young, so vibrant and with so much in life to look forward to. In November last year, we found out that Sophie, the 18 year old daughter of my lovely friends and neighbours, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.  She went through cheomtherapy and radiotherapy and thank goodness is now in remission. Sophie has finished studying for her A Levels and has now started studying at Birmingham University. Even though Sophie is in remission; the fight still goes on for her and many others suffering from this awful disease.
