On Monday, 16th December 2024, Maccabi GB, in partnership with Maccabi Tzair, proudly concluded the milestone 80th Chanukah Torch Relay. Over the course of the week, an impressive 65 educational sessions were delivered across schools and care homes nationwide, engaging more than 2,500 participants with the traditions and rich history of Chanukah. While the majority of this year’s sessions took place in London, the delegation extended the festival’s radiance to Manchester, ensuring the spirit of Chanukah reached as many people as possible.

This year’s event carried a profound sense of purpose and reflection, following the cancellation of the 2023 relay due to the devastating events of 7th October. The relay not only reignited the spirit of Chanukah but also symbolised resilience and unity across communities in the UK and beyond.

A Bridge Between Israel and the Diaspora

A cornerstone of the relay is the participation of Maccabi Tzair, the youth movement of the Maccabi World Union. Each year, young Israeli delegates travel the globe to share the story and essence of Chanukah, fostering a spiritual and cultural connection between the Jewish Diaspora and Israel. This year’s delegation included six vibrant and passionate young leaders: Noam Yitzaki, Noa Halevi, Evelina Donskoy, Yoav Shalom Shaked, Yoav Levi, and Roei Daniel, under the leadership of Madrich Shira Bussani.

Their mission was not only to educate but also to inspire, and they did so with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Through their efforts, the light of Chanukah was spread far and wide, illuminating hearts and minds in equal measure.

Bringing Chanukah to Life

The week-long programme featured a variety of engaging activities designed to resonate with participants of all ages. Arts and crafts, storytelling, music, drama, and interactive games ensured the Chanukah experience was both educational and enjoyable.

The delegation visited an extensive list of schools, including Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School, Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School, Independent Jewish Day School, and many more. In Manchester, they brought their energy and warmth to Bury & Whitefield Jewish Primary School and the renowned King David School. The delegation’s visit wasn’t confined to classrooms.

They also spent meaningful time in Jewish Care homes, engaging with residents through song, conversation, and shared stories. These interactions were particularly moving, forging connections across generations and ensuring that the joy of Chanukah was truly inclusive.

Rebecca Berger, Assistant Head for Curriculum at Clore Shalom School, praised the delegation’s efforts, stating: "The delegates were enthusiastic and extremely flexible. The children were very engaged and really enjoyed the sessions, which were informative and inspiring. A great morning – thank you!"

Moments of Reflection and Unity

The relay wasn’t just a celebration; it was also a time for reflection. At the Maccabi GB Inter-Charity Quiz, the delegation collaborated with the Jewish Leadership Council. During the event, Noa Halevi shared her deeply personal and moving story, recounting the tragic loss of her brother in the 7th October attacks. Her words underscored the importance of cherishing freedom, independence, and community – values that lie at the heart of Chanukah.

Celebrating Together

In addition to their packed schedule of school and care home visits, the delegation participated in community Shabbat celebrations. They joined Edgware United Synagogue for Friday night services and dinner, where they were warmly welcomed by members of Team GB’s Girls Football Squad from the European Maccabi Youth Games. On Shabbat morning, they attended services at Alyth Synagogue, further deepening their connection with the local Jewish community.

Candice Mendes da Costa, Maccabi GB’s Director of Events, reflected on the week’s success:"This year’s Torch Relay was particularly special. We are delighted that the delegation engaged with so many people across the country, sharing the story of Chanukah. It has been a true honour to work with such an inspiring group and to witness the joy they brought to participants."

Looking Ahead

The Maccabi GB Chanukah Torch Relay is more than an annual event; it’s a testament to the enduring values of the Maccabi Movement – the continuity of the Jewish people, love for Israel, and the universal desire for freedom and independence. As the 80th relay came to a close, the anticipation for the 81st is already building.

Through its outreach, education, and celebration, the Torch Relay continues to spread the light of Chanukah, uniting Jewish communities and strengthening bonds between Israel and the Diaspora.

As we reflect on this year’s success, we look forward to carrying the torch – both literally and figuratively – into the future, ensuring that the spirit of Chanukah burns bright for generations to come, and looking forward to bringing British Jewry to Israel, for the upcoming Maccabiah Games in the summer of 2025.
