Maccabi GB is Britain’s leading Jewish Sports, Health and Wellbeing charity and has flourished for over 80 years. The Organisation focuses on three central areas of work: Sport, Community and informal education. A member of Maccabi Europe, Maccabi GB has a professional staff team of 18, and an annual turnover of £1.5m and through its projects, programmes and events each year, engage up to 60,000 people nationally. The Maccabi GB Youth Games (EMYG24)

Maccabi GB are delighted to be hosting the inaugural European Maccabi Youth Games ‘EMYG24’, taking place in London from July 30 to August 6, 2024. To see the promotional video please click here.

Hundreds of young people from across Europe and the world, will be participating in a week of sporting competition, London sightseeing, learning about British Jewish history, culture and tradition and having a true Maccabi Jewish experience.

Based on one campus, the EMYG will feature up to 23 sports in Youth (U18) and Junior (U16) competitions.

As part of the EMYG, a specific programme for young athletes with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) will be piloted. The provision will aim to combine specific SEND sports competitions, divisioning of SEND athletes to complete in the overall competition and offering taster sessions in various sports for all athletes with SEND.

The EMYG is a special event not only for Maccabi GB but for the entire Jewish Community in the UK and Europe and this is your chance to be a big part of the games. We have a number of volunteering roles available that can give you opportunities to learn new skills, meet new people and feel part of the EMYG Community.

Administration and Logistics

What is it?

This will involve working closely with our Director of Finance and managing different people, ensuring the smooth running of the control centre, overseeing any requests from the helpdesk/phones/maintenance/medical/keys/credentials.

This role is for you if...

You would like a volunteering role which requires lots of interpersonal communication
You are a quick thinker and can prioritise many different tasks at once
You are an organised person who does not panic under pressure

This role will consist of:

Working closely with our Director of Finance
Managing and responding to participant needs and requests and passing on to the relevant department
Working with Maintenance / Security as needed and when necessary
Ensuring all requests are completed and solved

What is it?

A combined role that will involve managing and working closely with different people in the control centre, as well as within the event generally, so that all aspects of registration and helpdesk run smoothly throughout the event. You will be dealing with participant requests when they arise in a timely and efficient manner.

This role will consist of:

Ensuring meet and greet at the venue
Overseeing participant helpdesk volunteers during the event
Working closely with support roles during the event e.g. Medical and Security teams
Managing and responding to participant needs and requests during the event and passing on to the relevant department
Ensuring all requests are completed and solved
Working closely with Catering, Programming, Accommodation, Registration, Site and Office teams

What is it?

This will involve making sure all transportation runs smoothly and ensuring that all athletes and staff are in the right place at the right time. This will involve keeping in communication with many parties throughout the event. This means being the main point of contact for transport providers, TO’s, sports teams, educational teams, and the VIP team. This is a great opportunity to interact with many different people throughout the games.

This role is for you if...

You can prioritise and manage different competing priorities at any one time
You have excellent communication skills
You want a volunteering role where you are in contact with and able to interact with many different types of people

This role will consist of:

Liaising with transport providers throughout the event for airport and sports transfers
Working closely with the Registration and Site teams
Liaising with TO's for arrival and departure times
Liaising with the Sports team on sports schedules for off-site sports
Liaising with the Education team on education tours
Liaising with the VIP team for transport of VIPs
Help coordinate athletes and buses at venues and events where necessary
Act as a parking lot attendant and traffic controller

What is it?

The arrivals volunteers will be the first point of contact for all participants when meeting the delegations at the airports. This is a great way to welcome the athletes to EMYG and making them feel at ease when they first arrive.

This role is for you if...

You like meeting people
Have excellent communication skills
You want a volunteering role where you are the very first face people see when they arrive

This role will consist of:

Arrivals and Registration -

Greet delegations as they arrive at the airport
Ride on the bus and provide general information on the way to the accommodation
Direct participants to their accommodation

Departures -

Assist delegations with departure

What is it?

The Accommodation team will be the first point of contact for all participants with any rooming issues during their stay. This is a great way to welcome the athletes to EMYG and making them feel at ease when they first arrive.

This role is for you if...

You are organised and enjoy managing information efficiently
You are a problem solver and will ensure all issues are resolved in a timely manner
You want a volunteering role where you are the very first face many participants see when they arrive

This role will consist of:

Liaising with the Site on room allocations, extensions and changes during the event
Working closely with the Accommodation and Transport teams
Ensuring any issues during the event are solved

Education and Planning

What is it?

This will involve being in frequent contact with and working closely with VIP’s of the event. This will be during the Games and will also require collaboration with the Events / Ceremonies Team, the Catering Team and the Transport Team.

This role is for you if...

You have excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
You want a volunteering role where you can work directly with esteemed people within the community
You work well within a team

This role will consist of:

Working on VIP events with the Events / Ceremonies and Catering teams
Liaising with VIPs throughout the event
Assisting VIPs with accommodation
Working with the Transport team if transport is required

What is it?

This will involve working with multiple of teams to deliver the educational programming component of the event, including planning activities and booking the relevant space.

This role is for you if...

You want a volunteering role that is sociable and requires frequent contact with multiple people
You have some sort of prior experience within the educational sector which you would like to use
You are passionate about educating young people
You are organised, with great attention to detail

This role will consist of:

Developing and delivering programme including social programming 
Working closely with MarComms
Working closely with the Events and Ceremony Teams
Working closely with the Transportation Team  
Working with the Site Liaison team to ensure the relevant spacing is booked
Developing and delivering shabbat programme and communal activities

Engagement and Promotion

What is it?

This involves helping oversee many of the major marketing & communications aspects of the event, including signage, online and social media coverage, and working with various parties to ensure thorough promotion of the Event.

This role is for you if...

You have some sort of prior experience within marketing & communications, whether in a professional context or otherwise
You are well-organised and able to balance many competing priorities
You want a volunteering role where you can utilise your online skills and passion for social media

This role will consist of:

Developing and delivering a campaign to raise awareness of the event – social media, press, emails, promotional materials for Team GB
Providing daily updates to changes in scheduling to participants/spectators during the event 
Ensuring marketing activities take place during the event to raise awareness of goings on 
Working closely with programming, YTL, Families, volunteers, participant care, and office teams to ensure everything is covered
Creating a page on Maccabi GB website with all information including scheduling, timings, medal table
Sub-teams: photographers, social media, press liaison, videographers, programming updates/support, scheduling updates and sports results
Working with brand designers and the Purchasing team on all signage for the event
Ensuring all signage is in the correct locations and set up prior to and during the event

Event Support Services

What is it?

This will involve working with the venue catering team in the planning and delivering of all catering in the leadup to and throughout the event.

This role is for you if...

You have a passion for food and catering, especially within a large-scale event context
You have an understanding of different dietary requirements
You have good time-management and organisational skills

This role will consist of:

Working with venue catering team on menus, timings, numbers
Collating dietary requirements and ensuring all food is labelled
Ensuing packed lunches are ready for when needed
Working with Kashrut Board

Operations

What is it?

This is a front-facing role with the athletes and all spectators, directing and helping the community. Areas include accommodation, registration, catering and all sports facilities.

This role is for you if...

You want a volunteering role where you are interacting with a large amount of people
You have strong organisational skills
You can give clear and concise instructions

This role will consist of:

Working with all areas on their directional requirements of the athletes and spectators
Ensuring the athletes and spectators are directed to the correct locations and areas of the relevant sports
Have a good eye for making on the spot decisions if it looks like certain areas need more or less assistance

What is it?

Ensuring different on-site aspects of the event are working and liaising with the Sports Team and site representatives throughout the event.

This role is for you if...

You work well under pressure and can deal with issues if / when they arise
You enjoy working within a team
You want a volunteering role where you are directly involved in the running of a sporting event

This role will consist of:

Liaising with site representatives to finalise utilisation of the site(s), sports schedule and set up, and ensure contract arrangements are met during the event 
Making sure teams are where they need to be
Working closely with the Sports team to ensure equipment is present in time
Ensuring any issues during an event are solved
Running and recording scores where applicable
Ensuring officials know where to go in plenty of time

What is it?

Directly liaising with referees and officials throughout the event

This role is for you if...

You have strong inter-personal skills
You have good organisational skills
You want a volunteering role where you are directly involved in the running of a sporting event

This role will consist of:

Working with sport chairs on referee and official numbers needed
Liaising with referees and officials to ensure they know where they need to be and when

What is it?

This involves working closely with our medical team, helping oversee the major medical / first aid provisions for the event, screening records, and creating supply lists.

This role is for you if...

You have a background, or some prior experience in First Aid
You are a qualified physiotherapist
You work in an orderly, systematic fashion
You want a volunteering role where you are helping provide a vital service throughout the duration of a large event

This role will consist of:

Working closely with the medical provision being brought on board with all logistics and ensuring the right level of cover is provided
Screening all athletes' medical records
Providing a list of medical supplies to be purchased for the Games

Madrichim

We are looking to recruit Madrichim who will play a major part in ensuring the European Maccabi Youth Games 2024 (EMYG24) are the best they can be for all guest delegations from across the world!

What you will do

You will be the main point of contact for a group of up to 30 junior athletes. You will support their managers/coaches and be their British liaison to ensure everything runs smoothly for them. You will be the main link between the Games management and your group of international athletes and managers. You will ensure your group are aware and attend everything they need to, from their own sports schedule, to supporting others, to educational trips, social events and shabbat experiences. This is an amazing opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience, especially for those who are learning a language and wish to use and practice it in a fast-paced, exciting environment.

What you will need:

We are looking for people who have excellent leadership and communication skills.
The ideal candidate would have experience in leading groups of young people in informal settings and have logistics knowledge.
The madrichim need to be able to make quick informed decisions.
To be able to create and deliver educational programming during Shabbat.
To be able to enforce wider games ‘values’ and ensure there is respect and inclusivity amongst the athletes.
A huge amount of energy and ruach! We want the madrichim to help these athletes have the best possible week and a summer to remember.

Extra information:

All madrichim will complete a DBS check and safeguarding course.
All madrichim will be aged between 18 and 30.
All madrichim must take part in a Maccabi GB training day. There will be a number of options available.
The role begins on Monday 29th July and finishes on Tuesday 6th August.
You will not have accommodation on site but will need to be on site between 8am – 11pm. Each day may slightly vary.
If you are fluent/semi-fluent in any foreign language, please let us know.
If there is a specific team that you would like to work with, you can request it but we cannot make any promises.
You may be initially assigned one group and then it may change due to unforeseen circumstances, you will need to be flexible.
