Maccabi GB and the EMYG

Maccabi GB is Britain’s leading Jewish Sports, Health and Wellbeing charity and has flourished for over 80 years. The Organisation focuses on three central areas of work: Sport, Community and informal education. A member of Maccabi Europe, Maccabi GB has a professional staff team of 18, and an annual turnover of £1.5m and through its projects, programmes and events each year, engage up to 60,000 people nationally. Maccabi GB are delighted to be hosting the inaugural European Maccabi Youth Games ‘EMYG24’, taking place in London from July 30 to August 6, 2024. To see the promotional video please click here.  

 

Hundreds of young people from across Europe and the world, will be participating in a week of sporting competition, London sightseeing, learning about British Jewish history, culture and tradition and having a true Maccabi Jewish experience.  

 

Based on one campus at the University of Hertfordshire, the EMYG will feature up to 23 sports in Youth (U18) and Junior (U16) competitions. 

 

As part of the EMYG, a specific programme for young athletes with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) will be piloted. The provision will aim to combine specific SEND sports competitions, divisioning of SEND athletes to complete in the overall competition and offering taster sessions in various sports for all athletes with SEND.

The EMYG is a special event not only for Maccabi GB but for the entire Jewish Community in the UK and Europe and this is your chance to be a big part of the games. We have a number of volunteering roles available that can give you opportunities to learn new skills, meet new people and feel part of the EMYG Community.

Administration and Finance

What is it?  

 

This involves helping oversee the major financial aspects of the event, especially regarding the overall budget  

 

This role is for you if... 

 

You have a passion for, and prior experience, working with finance 

 

You are methodical and have excellent time-management skills 

 

You want a volunteering role where you can work within a financial capacity 

 

You want a ‘behind the scenes’ volunteering role 

 

This role will consist of:  

 

  • Ensuring budget is kept up to date throughout and no overspend 

  • Working with all areas to ensure budget is adhered to  

  • Paying invoices for suppliers  

  • Invoicing TO’s ahead of payment deadlines  

  • Following event – ensure budget is reconciled  

Education and Planning

What is it?

 

This will involve helping to organise key events/ceremonies which fall within the overall event. This will require close work with the Event Company and the Ceremony and Events Committee.

   

This role is for you if... 

 

You have experience in organising and throwing events, especially those on a larger scale, and want a volunteering role where you can directly utilise this experience 

 

You are highly organised  

 

You are capable of liaising with multiple parties to successfully deliver different aspects of an event  

 

This role will consist of:  

 

  • Being responsible for the production and organisation of the Opening Ceremony, Closing Ceremony, VIP ceremony, Friday Night Dinner, Other Parties and Medal Ceremonies 

  • Working closely with the Event Company on all requirements and advising them on what we require 

  • Working with the Ceremony and Events Committee on the content of all ceremonies and events  

Engagement and Promotion

What is it?

 

This will involve managing and working closely with different people on the helpdesk itself, as well as within the event generally, so that the helpdesk runs smoothly throughout the event. You will be dealing with participant requests when they arise in a timely and efficient manner.

   

This role is for you if... 

 

You would like a volunteering role which requires lots of interpersonal communication 

 

You are a quick thinker with an ability to solve problems in a timely fashion  

 

You can balance many competing priorities and tasks at once 

 

This role will consist of:  

 

  • Staffing and overseeing participant helpdesk volunteers during the event  

  • Working closely with support roles during the event e.g. Medical and Security Teams   

  • Managing and responding to participant needs and requests during the event, and passing on to the relevant department  

  • Ensuring all requests are completed and solved   

  • Working closely with catering, programming, accommodation, registration, site and office teams  

Event Support Services

What is it?

​

This will involve working with the venue catering team in the planning and delivering of all catering in the leadup to and throughout the event.

    

This role is for you if... 

 

You have a passion for food and catering, especially within a large-scale event context. 

 

You have an understanding of different dietary requirements. 

 

You have good time-management and organisational skills. 

 

This role will consist of:  

  • Working with venue catering team on menus, timings, numbers

  • Collating dietary requirements and ensuring all food is labelled

  • Ensuing pack lunches are ready for when needed

  • Working with Kashrut Board 

Logisitics and Operations

What is it?

​

This will involve assigning all rooms prior to the Games for athletes, coaches and management, ensuring keys and rooms are ready for arrival day. In addition to this, the Accommodation team will be the first point of contact for all participants with any rooming issues during their stay. This is a great way to welcome the athletes to EMYG and make them feel at ease when they first arrive.  

 

The busiest periods will be in the 2 month lead up to the games as well as throughout the games

 

This role is for you if... 

 

You are organised and enjoying managing information efficiently  

 

You are a problem solver and will ensure all issues are resolved in a timely manner  

 

You want a volunteering role where you are the very first face many participants will see when they arrive  

 

This role will consist of:  

 

  • Assigning room allocations  

  • Liaising with the site on room allocations, extensions and changes both before and during the event  

  • Working with registration to ensure all keys are ready for arrival day  

  • Liaising with site representatives to finalise contract arrangements, utilisation of the site(s) and ensure contract arrangements are met during the event  

  • Working closely with accommodation and Transport teams  

  • Ensuring any issues during an event are solved
