Updated: Jan 31

This term began with the first of our Primary school sports tournaments, sponsored by All Aboard, bringing together hundreds of young athletes to compete for coveted trophies, in our safe, Jewish spaces.

We started with the Year 3 & 4 mixed football tournament, which saw 180 players representing 18 teams from 9 schools. Spectators were treated to some fantastic football throughout the event. After a round-robin stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and an intense final, Etz Chaim Blue staged an incredible comeback from two goals down to defeat Naima Red 3-2 in the dying moments of extra time. The thrilling match was witnessed by 60 spectators.

Next, we hosted the Year 5 & 6 girls’ football tournament, welcoming an impressive 325 players and 125 spectators. Thirty-five teams from 17 schools participated in the competition. After a gruelling day of matches, the group winners advanced to the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and ultimately the final. Independent JDS Red clinched victory with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Yavneh Blue, securing the trophy in a brilliant display of skill and teamwork.

We are excited to relaunch our grassroots community events, beginning with a Pickleball taster and open day.

Maccabi GB held its first community event of the year on Sunday, 26th January. The Maccabi GB Pickleball taster day welcomed 25 participants, ranging from complete beginners picking up a paddle for the first time to seasoned Pickleball players. The event was led by Harvey Becker, head coach at the Harvey Becker Tennis Centre and Maccabi GB’s racket sports partner.

Using our fully equipped sports hall, complete with moveable nets and court lines, participants took part in a series of drills designed to enhance their Pickleball skills. The afternoon was split into two 90-minute sessions, each concluding with match play.

We were also pleased to welcome Mark Feldman, Team GB’s Maccabiah 25 Pickleball manager, who spoke to players about future opportunities within the sport.

Next on our agenda is the 3x3 Basketball Tournament taking place on 23rd February. This is an event we are delighted to organise in collaboration with Martin Dyan, founder of RISE 3x3, and Daniel Tannenbaum, Maccabi GB’s grassroots basketball chair. The afternoon will feature junior and open competitions, vibrant music, and a lively atmosphere—guaranteed to make it a day to remember. Sign up now at www.maccabigb.org/3x3basketball

Behind the scenes, we’ve established the Professionals in Sport Committee to shape the future of our sporting events. This volunteer committee , composed of key figures from the Jewish sports community, will oversee the organisation, promotion, and development of upcoming activities, ensuring an exciting and dynamic calendar for all involved.
