The Maccabi GB Sports Department have been running tournaments for primary and secondary schools throughout November.
On Wednesday 27th November we held our Year 5 and 6 Boys Football tournament. However this was no normal tournament. It was the largest primary school tournament that we’ve ever hosted. A sold out venue hosted 43 teams from 18 different Jewish primary schools. To put that into context that’s 11 more teams than those that compete in the World Cup. Braving the freezing weather a further 175 spectators cheered on their schools. The Red and Blue tournament was made up of 35 teams that played their round robin matches across 7 groups with the top team advancing alongside the best runner up out of all the groups. After some exciting knockout stage football the final came down to Wolfson Hillel Blue and Rosh Pinah Red. The final was a tight affair with only a single goal splitting the teams. Wolfson Hillel Blue came out on top 1-0.
In the Green tournament, which consisted of 8 teams Rosh Pinah Green beat HJPS Green in the final.
In recent weeks, we also hosted the Year 5 & 6 Girls’ Football Tournament, where over 280 girls competed in a safe, enjoyable, and competitive environment. Yavneh Blue emerged victorious, beating Sinai Blue 1-0 in the final. Due to high interest, we also organised a Green Tournament, which provides additional participation opportunities for schools with enough players. HJPS Green triumphed over Akiva Green in the final.
It’s not just primary schools benefiting from Maccabi GB competitions. We also ran two secondary school events, featuring table tennis, badminton, and football. The badminton and table tennis tournaments, held at JFS, welcomed participants from Years 7 to 11 in doubles competitions. In badminton, JFS A won the Year 7 and Year 8 tournaments, while Yavneh College secured victories in the Years 9–11 categories. The table tennis results were similarly split between two schools: JFS claimed titles for Years 7, 8, and the combined Years 11 and 12 event, while Immanuel College triumphed in the Year 8 and Year 10 tournaments.
Our final event of the month saw 110 players from three secondary schools competing in the boys’ 5-a-side Football Tournament. JFS won the Year 7 and Year 9 titles, while JCoSS claimed victory in the Year 8 and Year 10 competitions.
The Grassroots Clubs programme continues to thrive, offering activities across various sports. The sports back page in the Jewish Chronicle has helped spotlight these grassroots clubs, associations, and recipients of grants from the Maccabi GB Endowment Fund through stories and features.
We now have several well-established clubs. The Maccabi GB Strollers Walking Football Club holds weekly matches, regularly attracting over 25 players. The Maccabi Magic Basketball Club delivers weekly technical sessions, led by guest coaches alongside regular staff. Excitingly, new clubs are in development—more details will be announced soon!
This month also marks the launch of the Maccabi GB Clubs and Associations Forum. This monthly meeting brings together all our clubs and associations, providing a platform to share ideas, collaborate, and discuss the challenges of running them successfully.
